The film is the first part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Director: Zack Snyder
Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams

The existence of Superman is brought into question after the damage Metropolis has suffered. Batman shares the opinion with the masses – that Superman is dangerous and that everyone would benefit from doing without him. He takes on himself to get the world rid of Clark Kent’s alter ego while another villain, Lex Luthor, plots his evil scheme to take over the world.

The film is a sequel to Man of Steel (2013) and part two of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This was the first time a live-action film featured Batman and Superman together on screen as well as live-action Wonder Woman.

3. Suicide Squad (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Director: David Ayer
Starring: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie

The government’s secret agency forms a squad made of incarcerated criminals with special powers whose task is to inspect and terminate an unknown but highly dangerous force threatening to wipe out humanity. A successful mission will grant them a shortened jail sentence, but if they fail, the responsibility will be their own. On top of everything, each of them gets a bomb inserted in their necks which will be a sombre reminder of what awaits them in case they decide to escape.

The film had its spin-off in 2020 named Birds of Prey with Margot Robbie and will have a sequel, The Suicide Squad, in 2021.

4. Wonder Woman (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Director: Patty Jenkins
Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright

When a pilot crashes into an isolated island, he will come face to face with no other than the princess of the Amazons, a woman named Diana, who will decide to help him after she hears a terrible story about the Great War unfolding. They will both travel to London, where Diana will realise how majestic her powers are in the fight against the god Ares, who she believes is the primary instigator of World War I.

Wonder Woman first appeared in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Wonder Woman (2017) is the second live action film that features her. Its sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, will be shown in cinemas on October 2, 2020.

5. Justice League (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Director: Zack Snyder
Starring: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa

The events of the story follow those of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. With Superman dead, Batman re-thinks his actions and teams up with Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in search for other meta-humans who will assist them in protecting the world from evil forces. With the help of Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg, they will stand up to Steppenwolf, a villain who’s in pursuit of three very important artefacts hidden across the Earth.

The film is part five in the DC Extended Universe and a sequel to 2016’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is also one of the most expensive movies ever produced.

Right before the film’s release, fans started to demand for the original version to become available for viewing. Zack Snyder, the film’s first director (until he handed over those duties to Joss Whedon), said in May 2020 that his original cut will have its release on HBO Max the following year, under the name Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

6. Aquaman (2018)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Director: James Wan
Starring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe

Arthur Curry learns that he is the rightful heir of the underwater realm, Atlantis, being the only son of the Atlantean Queen. However, he also learns that his evil-minded half-brother Orm intends to proclaim himself the ruler of the same kingdom and attack the surface world. Arthur has to become Aquaman and dedicate himself and his powers to stopping Orm’s wicked plan.

The film was a financial success, earning over $1.1 billion across the world, which made it the highest-grossing film based on a character from DC Comics (until then, it was The Dark Knight Rises made in 2012).

On December 16 2020 its sequel, Aquaman 2, will be released; in development is also a spin-off named The Trench.

7. Shazam! (2019)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Director: David F. Sandberg
